Nvidia’s RTX 4080 Super is three times more powerful than PS5, Digital Foundry claims

In like-for-like scenarios, Nvidia’s RTX 4080 SUPER is three times more powerful than Sony’s PlayStation 5

Digital Foundry has released an interesting new video that showcases the power of the latest PC graphics cards when compared to Sony’s PlayStation 5 console in like-for-like scenarios. The video specifically focuses on Nvidia’s recently released RTX 4080 SUPER. The RTX 4080 SUPER is said to be around three times as powerful as Sony’s PS5 console, highlighting the huge performance of today’s high-end gaming PCs.

In the video below, three games are tested. These games are A Plague Tale: Requiem, Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2. At the same settings and resolutions, Nvidia’s RTX 4080 SUPER is around 2.8-3.2x faster than PS5. AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX was also tested at similar settings. AMD’s GPU flagship enjoying similarly large performance gains over PlayStation 5. That said, the RX 7900 XTX fell behind its Nvidia rival when more demanding path-tracing tests were conducted.

What this video from Digital Foundry demonstrates is that high-end PC hardware is much more powerful than today’s consoles. Remember, these performance gains from Nvidia’s RTX 4080 SUPER used like-for-like game settings. That means that DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation were not utilised to achieve further performance gains. If DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation are included, the RTX 4080 SUPER’s framerates are 3.9x faster than PS5 in A Plague Tale Requiem.
