Samsung reveals glasses-free Odyssey 3D monitors at Gamescom 2024

3D screen technology is making a comeback with Samsung’s new Odyssey 3D monitors

At Gamescom 2024, Samsung has revealed multiple new glasses-free 3D monitors. These new screens make up Samsung’s new Odyssey 3D series of gaming monitors, and will offer users screen sizes of 27 and 37 inches.

Using new “Light Field Display” (LFD) technology, Samsung can deliver lifelike 3D images using 2D content. Samsung claims to be using a “lenticular lens” to achieve this effect using eye-tracking and view mapping technologies. This, Samsung claims, delivers an optimised 3D experience without the need for separate 3D glasses.

Samsung’s “lenticular lens” technology allows the company’s new 3D monitors to project different images to each eye. This enables the company’s glasses-free 3D effect.

Eye tracking on these monitors comes via built-in serio cameras, with view mapping continuously adjusting the image to enhance depth perception.

Both of Samsung’s Oddysey 3D screens feature 4K display resolutions and 165Hz maximum refresh rates. Samsung claims that these screens feature a 1ms GTG response time, and support AMD’s FreeSync Premium technology. Input-wise, these screens support DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1, with one of the former connector and two of the latter.
