Update – VESA has confirmed that they do not have a “DisplayHDR 2000” tier within their DisplayHDR specification. This makes Taobao’s retail listing for Samsung’s Odyssey G9 incorrect, and VESA has stated that they “not endorse the use of this logo unless and until a DisplayHDR 2000 tier has been officially announced by VESA”.

Samsung’s working on an updated version of its super-wide 5K Odyssey G9 monitor, upgrading the already impressive monitor with a mini LED display panel which features a 1ms GTG response time and over 2,000 Local-Dimming zones.

According to the Chinese retailer Taobao, as confirmed by TFT Central, Samsung’s new Odyssey 49″ G9 S49AG95NC monitor will feature the same 5120×1440 (Dual-wide 1440p) resolution and 240Hz refresh rate as its predecessor and contain support for a higher-end HDR implementation that meets VESA’s DisplayHDR 2000 standard.

Not only will Samsung’s new Odyssey G9 monitor feature higher peak brightness levels, but it will also offer users improved contrast levels. Samsung’s Mini LED technology enhances this monitor’s VA panel to offer users 2,048 local dimming zones to allow this screen to produce darker darks and brighter highlights. While this will not enable the same contrast levels as OLED-based screens, mini LED will deliver similar results in many instances.

Mini-LED screens minimise the halo effect of low-end HDR implementations, enabling higher contrast levels higher quality HDR experiences. Samsung’s use of a Mini LED HDR display should make their new Odyssey G9 monitor a superior solution for viewing HDR content.

Samsung’s new Odyssey G9 monitor has also been listed as a G-Sync compatible screen, allowing gamers to benefit from tear-free PC gaming and increased smoothness when gaming on Samsung’s latest G9 model. With such a wide aspect ratio, Samsung’s Odyssey G9 is a perfect monitor for racing games, first-person shooters and simulation games like Microsoft Flight Simulator.

With a Quantum Dot display panel and support for 10-bit colour depths, Samsung’s new Odyssey G9 is suitable for content playback, gaming and some colour sensitive work, offering 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space. With a 1000R curvature, this screen is also highly suited to workstation or office use, especially given this monitor’s support for various picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture modes.
