The first HDMI 2.2 products are expected in 2027

Next year will see the release of the world’s first HDMI 2.2 products

According to Rob Tobias, the head of the HDMI Licensing Administrator, HDMI 2.2 devices should start releasing next year. HDMI 2.2 delivers up to twice the bandwidth of HDMI 2.1, offering up to 96 Gbps.

Tobias said to ARM Devices that chipmakers are due to start sampling FRL2 silicon this year, leading to the release of the first HDMI 2.2 products in 2027. This bandwidth can enable support for 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, and 12K at 120Hz.

We’re hearing chip manufacturers will start to sample their FRL2 chips this year. And so we should start to see some 96 or up to 96 gigabit HDMI 2.2 products next year,

The HDMI 2.2 specification was finalised in June 2025, and it is expected to be supported by next-generation graphics cards and games consoles. The first certified Ultra96 (96 Gbps) HDMI cables are due to be released later this year.

Currently, it is unknown when the first HDMI 2.2 devices will be released. It is likely that HDMI 2.2 will first arrive with new TVs and monitors, with supporting hardware launching at a similar timeframe. High-end TVs are expected to lead the charge in HDMI 2.2 adoption.

HDMI 2.2 uses the same FRL signalling system as HDMI 2.1, albeit in its FRL2 form. This should enable an easier transition with HDMI 2.2, at least compared with the move from HDMI 2.0 to HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.1 moved from TMDS to FSR. This required more hardware-level changes to devices such as TVs, AV receivers, and other products.

For PC users, we expect HDMI 2.2 support to arrive with Nvidia’s RTX 60 series and AMD RDNA 5 GPUs. RDNA 5 should be the architecture behind PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Xbox (Project Helix). This means that next-generation consoles could support HDMI 2.2. With both console manufacturers aiming to support Frame Generation, HDMI 2.2 support could be handy.
