The second-hand market has always been filled with scammers, hoping to trick their customers into purchasing sub-standard products in an effort to earn some quick money.

In the PC market, second-hand online retailers like eBay are filled with "fake GPUs", graphics cards which have been BIOS flashed to present themselves as newer models when inserted inside a system. This is designed to fool purchasers into thinking that they have received what they paid for, despite the fact that their graphics card will offer sub-standard performance and specifications that do not match real graphics cards.

AIDA64, a popular system monitoring software from Finalwire, has received a beta update which adds support for "fake nVIDIA video cards detection", mirroring GPU-Z's recent "Fake GPUs" update, in an effort to better inform consumers. These softwares can be used to build evidence against fake GPU resellers when moving through the complaints process within websites like eBay.

Fake graphics cards are relatively easy to spot on websites like eBay, mostly though misleading specifications in the GPU's online listing, unusual looking stock coolers and power configurations or the lack of branding from well known Nvidia AIB partners.

AIDA64's latest beta version can be downloaded here. At this time we are unsure how AIDA 64 will notify users that they are using fake Nvidia hardware.
