AMD are rumoured to have only 16,000 RX Vega GPUs available at launch, suggesting that there will be a shortage of Vega graphics cards upon release.

This rumour comes from Tweaktown, who states that their exclusive industry source told them that their will only be a handful of RX Vega GPUs at launch.

If this rumour sounds familiar, it should, as Tweaktown released a similar article back in 2015 which suggested that AMD would only have 30,000 R9 Fury/Fury X GPUs units in total, which again came from an exclusive industry source and delivers the same reasoning for AMD's low GPU numbers.

Tweaktown has suggested that this shortage is due to low supplies of HBM2, which has been available in Nvidia's P100 GPUs for almost a year and is created by more suppliers than HBM was when AMD created the R9 Fury X.

In short, this new rumour looks recycled, though it is not uncommon for there to be GPU shortages at launch, with AMD's Polaris based-RX 400 series having supply issues during its launch window last year.

This new rumour needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt, especially given the fact that Tweaktown calls the RX Vega a GTX 1070 competitor.

TweakTown. 'Nuff said. Even if it's true, I wouldn't take it from them.Quote

I can see this being another Fury X disaster if this is true, I hope the performance is better than the Fury X was at the time though.Quote

16000 is a tiny number of gpus. For a company with a global customer base that leaves very few per region. I highly doubt that this is true, it would be more embarrassing for amd to be this ludicrously under supplied than to have nothing at all.Quote
