AMD has shown off their Polaris RX 480 GPU running DOOM at 1440p 144Hz using the OpenGL API, showcasing some great performance for AMD's upcoming Polaris Architecture.

The below picture was leaked by an AMD employee last night and was quickly taken offline, likely at AMD's request. The game is running on a Lenovo Y27F monitor, which is a 144Hz 1080p monitor, meaning that the game is running at 1440p by using AMD's Virtual Screen Resolution.

At this time, it is unknown what game settings they are using to run DOOM, though it nonetheless encouraging to see DOOM running well at 1440p on this GPU as this places performance in the line of AMD's R9 390X or perhaps even AMD's R9 Fury or Nano series GPUs. In our dedicated testing, we were only able to run DOOM at 60+ FPS consistently when High or below settings using AMD's R9 Fury X.

Sadly right now there is not much clear information available about AMD's upcoming Polaris GPUs, but right now it seems like AMD will be focusing more on the mid-range and performance segments of the GPU market, rather than the enthusiast grade market that Nvidia's GTX 1080 is currently aimed towards.

Hopefully, we will learn more about AMD's upcoming Polaris series GPUs over the next few days and weeks but for now, it looks like AMD will not be providing the GTX 1080 competitor that we have all been hoping for.

Yeah but from what I understand, it don't show us much. That's a 1080 monitor so it's running VSR. We also don't get to see what settings are used and the actual framerates. I would love to see some actual metrics so we could see what we're talking about. I'm really looking forward to this launch.Quote
