With the release of MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4, Apple has introduced support for external graphics cards (eGPUs) through Thunderbolt 3. This update will allow Mac users to utilise external graphics hardware to accelerate both professional and gaming workloads, though at this time Apple has only listed support for Radeon GPU hardware.

Using an external GPU enclosure through Thunderbolt 3, users of compatible Mac hardware will be able to accelerate Metal, OpenGL and OpenCL workloads, use the external GPU as a hub for additional monitors and use the eGPU enclosure as a charger for your MacBook Pro.

Apple has provided a list of supported eGPU enclosures and graphics cards, though users will need to be careful and ensure that their eGPU chassis can power both its internal GPU and a connected MacBook Pro. Below is a list of supported graphics hardware.

- AMD Radeon RX 570
- AMD Radeon RX 580
- AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100
- AMD RX Vega 56
- AMD RX Vega 64
- AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition Air
- AMD Radeon pro WX 9100

Apple's support webpage offers a more detailed rundown of eGPU hardware support, with no mention of Nvidia graphics hardware from both their professional and gaming lineups. More information about Apple's external Thunderbolt 3 GPU support can be found here.
