The Xbox One is well known to be less powerful than the PS4 in terms of pure GPU horsepower, though many believe that Microsoft's DirectX 12 will help even the score with Sony's PS4. A gameplay designer by the name of Alan Kertz that has claimed that DirectX 12 for the Xbox One will not be able to even the odds with Sony as it is imply using inferior hardware. 

We already know that DICE's upcoming first and third person Shooter, Star Wars: Battlefront, will be running at 900p on the PS4 and at 720p on the Xbox One, so we know that DICE were unable to squeeze out enough performance out of the Xbox one in order to give similar performance. 

 

No amount of consumer trust can change that it's just an inferior horse in the horsepower category.

But just like last gen, when enough exclusives pile up and the price drops it'll be a worthy purchase.

As I meant to say: Xbone will always be behind the PS4 this generation because it isn't as powerful. Stupid typo.

[on the topic of the PS3] the PS3 was more difficult to get power out of, but it wasn't significantly less powerful. It took more investment.

[can dx12 even the odds?] I don't think so, it's not going to be able to reduce overhead enough to make up the margin.

From the very beginning it has been known that the PS4 has some distinct hardware advantages, containing 50% more GPU cores than the Xbox One, though the Xbox Ones GPU cores run at slightly higher clocks, and uses faster GDDR5 system memory instead of the Xbox One's DDR3 memory. This has lead to many games running at much higher resolutions on the PS4, one recent example being Star Wars Battlefront, which runs at 900p on the PS4 and 720p on the Xbox One.  

Even Microsoft's Phil Spencer, the head of their Xbox Division,  says that he does not know if Microsoft can catch up with Sony this console generation, as Sony already has a massive lead in terms of hardware sales.

We'll still see a lot of benefits because at least Xbox One will also use Dx12. And tbh, we need consoles as a current gaming hardware standard in order to keep PC gaming affordable and therefore existent. If a game can run on a console, it can run on a PC of similar specs similarly. That's not a bad thing. And we can still do more, but we don't have to shell out hundreds of monies every year.Quote
