Frontier Developments, the game developer behind Elite Dangerous, has announced that the game will get SteamVR support in the form of a free update coming this holiday season.

According to the press release, the HTC Vive (the VR-Headset HTC has been working on with Valve) will be the first virtual-reality headset available to consumers with its Holiday 2015 launch.

Jonny Watts, Chief Creative Officer at Frontier Developments said the following about Elite Dangerous’ SteamVR support:

“We’re thrilled to announce SteamVR support as part of the ongoing expansion of Elite Dangerous. Back in December 2013 we were among the first to support virtual reality with a triple-A game, and for me, exploring, trading and fighting throughout Elite Dangerous’ 1:1 scale Milky Way remains an unequaled virtual reality experience. We have been working closely with Valve to bring Elite Dangerous to HTC Vive, and we are delighted with the quality we have been able to achieve.”

People attending EGX 2015 – a gaming event which takes place September 24th until September 27th in Birmingham – will be able to play a preview of Elite Dangerous on SteamVR at the Elite: Dangerous and HTC booths.
