Elite: Dangerous owners to be given Steam keys

When Elite: Dangerous was recently added to Steam many of it's current owners wondered if Frontier would provide them with Steam Codes in order to Migrate to Steam from the game's dedicated launcher. Now Frontier Developments has announced that from May 28th current owners of the game will be able to generate Steam Keys for anyone who bought the game form their store.

Frontier Developments has confirmed that the Steam release has "no functional difference" between it and the version available on the game's website and that both can be played together online. Right now the game is priced at £39.99 on Steam.

Below is Frontier Development's official announcement;

"Some breaking news for you:

We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future.

We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous, but we know a number of long-time players and backers like to play through Steam and we think it’s fair everyone has that option, not just new players.

Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy. It’s coming soon. From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time.

The team really has been working hard on this one, and we’re all super happy to finally have an answer for you. Thanks for bearing with us and thanks for playing, as always.

Edit: This applies to Kickstarter backers, too. "

Frontier have pointed out that if you want to support the developer fully that you should purchase the game from their store, as Valve will not get a cut of the Earnings and the buyer will still get a Steam key for the game.

Elite Dangerous is a game that is definitely a game that is worth checking out, though be warned this game is more of a Space Driving Sim than a Action Space adventure, so please bear that in mind.

Nice write-up mate! Very in-depth

Good thing Frontier does this. I feel like this is something every developer should do.Quote

Its more common then you'd think! That said, they were all games that were successfully crowd funded..Quote

This is nice for those where Steam works for them all the time, but for me I will stick to the standard launcher and keep it off Steam, and that way I don't have to deal with the usual BS that I get with Steam connections, also means I don't have to deal with them trying to remove my Steam account after logging in from a different IP address.

Either way it's good news for those who use Steam for all there games.Quote
