More PCI-SIG-related news! A new connector, called OCuLink, which allows you to connect full-on GPUs externally, may be closer than we think. PCI-SIG has been working on this PCIe connector for over three years now, and the developers will probably finish the technology this fall.

OCuLink will allow laptops (just as to run external GPUs for extra performance. It is possible that thish tech may not be widely adopted by the industry. OCuLink will feature four PCIe lanes with bit speeds starting at 8GT/s and 4GB/s of peak bandwidth, which is very comparable to PCIe 3.0. The connector will feature copper cables, but other revisions with optical cables may launch in the future.

An alternative to OCuLink is Thunderbolt, which offer a better bandwith (5GB/s) and utilizes the USB Type-C connector, which is rapidly growing in popularity. Of course OCuLink might be cheaper to make. OCuLink might also be a good option for connecting components like SSDs to motherboards. What do you think? Will OCuLink at one point become a killer-feature or is this doomed to fail? Let us know.

Probably won't get adopted at all, especially with all the USB cables out and about now and people focusing on them.Quote

This might come in handy for the companies that want to make external gpu cases for laptops. (looking at you MSI)Quote
