It has been revealed that Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns will be locked to a maximum framerate of 60Hz and a maximum resolution of 1080p, leaving high end PC gamers with no ability to use their monitors to their full potential.

This will not be the first or only JRPG Game that will be lock down like this that Square Enix has released this month, as Dragon Quest Heroes, a game which was released on December 3rd, also had the same lock on the games framerate and FPS.

One thing to note about the PC version of the game is that the PC version of the games Steam Store page does explicitly say that the game doesn’t support resolutions above 1080p, which is a definite improvement given that gamers were not told about the 720p lock that was on the previous FFXIII games.

The PC port will allow both full-screen and windowed play and will support up to 60fps. There’s no 4k support, however, with the highest resolution option being 1920×1080.

This game has super low hardware requirements, requiring a minimum of a Windows XP OS, a Dual core CPU, 1.5GB of RAM and an Nvidia 8800GT or an AMD HD 4770.

The game recommends a quad core setup, 2GB of RAM and a GTX 460 or HD 5770, which is obscenely low for a modern PC title.

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows® XP SP2 or later
  • Processor: 2GHz Dual Core CPU
  • Memory: 1500 MB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce 8800GT / ATI Radeon HD 4770 VRAM 512MB or later
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 22 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Sound card compatible with DirectX 9.0c

Recommended:

  • OS: Windows® Vista/ 7/ 8
  • Processor: Intel® Coreâ„¢ 2 Quad (2.66 GHz)/ AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X4 (2.8 GHz) processor
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 460/ ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 5770
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 22 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Sound card compatible with DirectX 9.0c

For a modern PC title locking down the games framerate and resolution is spitting in the faces of those who use high resolution or high refresh rate monitors, preventing them from using their hardware to it’s fullest potential.

While locking the games framerate to 60 and resolution to 1080p may be enough to keep a large amount of PC gamers happy,  given the fact that 1080p and 60Hz are the most common refresh rates and resolutions, but it is simply not good enough to please high end or hardcore PC gamers. This is something that Square Enix will need to work on in the future, as these limitations will certainly prevent some users from purchasing the title.
