Google's quantum computer is '100 million times faster than your PC'

Quantum computing is something that could revolutionize the way we even consider PCs, potentially providing an unparalleled level of PC performance at a level which simply put will leave the performance of current PCs in the dust, even today's beefiest supercomputers.

Google and NASA has claimed that they now have proof that their D-Wave X2 quantum computer works and claims that it is '100 million times faster" than current PCs, though this is in a specific proof of concept computing problem.

Google director of engineering, Hartmut Neven, said this;

       For a specific, carefully crafted proof-of-concept problem we achieve a 100-million-fold speed-up.

Quantum computing is a significant leap in computing performance capability, but not because it used more powerful CPU cores, architecture or is made using a newer manufacturing process like traditional computers.

Unlike normal computers Quantum Computers work with qubits instead of traditional bits, the 1s and 0s in traditional computing language. Qubits don't just operate as 1s or 0s but can operate as both values simultaneously, allowing information to be processed in a way that no traditional computer can handle, allowing certain problems to be computed much faster than with traditional computers.

In essence Quantum computers can allow certain computing problems to be solved in mere days or hours, when traditional computers could take decades or centuries to complete the same task, which simply put is an amazing prospect. Provided that the theory can be made into a working a working product.

Quantum computers can innovate almost every form of PC computing, especially in the fields of encryption and artificial intelligence. Imagine a PC that can compute every possible solution to a problem simultaneously, potentially cracking today's most secure of encrypted data in mere hours when traditional PC could take longer than the age of the known universe.

is cryptographic cracking - so they could break pretty much any modern encryption mechanism in almost real-time....great.Quote

if this is true this is the biggest change in computing since WW2. everything will be different, Except war, war never changes Quote
