GTX 1080 Teardown reveals PCB design

A GTX 1080 Teardown reveals a PCB design that is very similar, yet less complex, than the GTX 980. Sadly the pictures are not at a very high resolution, but they do show a much cleaner PCB design that has a similar layout to Nvidia's GTX 980.

We can see here that the backplate of the GTX 1080 can be taken apart in two parts, giving GPUs that are close together extra breathing space when used in large SLI configurations.

When comparing the GTX 980 and 1080 we can see that the GPUs have very similar construction and cooler designs, with the main changes being aesthetic in external aesthetic.

Looking at the PCB of the GTX 1080 we can see that the PCB of the newer GTX 1080 has a lot more open space when compared to the GTX 980, which could potentially lead to shorter 3rd party designs than what was possible with the GTX 980.

Looking at the GTX 1080's new SLI connectors we can see that there is little aesthetic difference between the design of Nvidia's SLI connections, which could mean that the new "high bandwidth" SLI connector could simply just use two traditional SLI fingers for a dual-GPU SLI configuration instead of one, though this is yet to be confirmed.

One thing that we can also see in the PCB design of Nvidia's GTX 1080 is that there is space for an extra 6-pin power connector, allowing aftermarket designs to use additional power connectors.

Can we please mark this thread as NSFW. Thanks.

If/When I get one of these I'm totes desoldering/cutting off that DVI connector and having a single slot sex machine with a waterblock on it. OM NOM NOMQuote

I think that this post should be listed NSFW.

I do love it when a GPU is modded to be single slot with water cooling. Looks lush.Quote

Aye I kinda miss my 580 EVGA Hydro Copper 2's they were single slot out the box with lovely waterblocks. *sigh*Quote

Does this mean gtx 980 waterblock would fit the 1080 as the layout and holes look pretty much the sameQuote

I wouldn't think so. They will be similar, but not identical. The GPU die is the most important bit and that is not the exact same size.Quote
