ILMxLAB Showcase Star Wars VR Expereince

ILMxLAB was formed last year, combining the talents of Lucasfilm, ILM and Skywalker Sound in order to create immersive entertainment and storytelling experiences with VR.

This game was originally intended to release alongside Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, but the HTC Vive's delay had delayed the release of the product. Right now it looks like this VR experience will release alongside the HTC Vive sometime in April.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and parent company Lucasfilm, Ltd. announce the formation of ILM Experience Lab (ILMxLAB), a new division that will draw upon the talents of Lucasfilm, ILM and Skywalker Sound. ILMxLAB combines compelling storytelling, technological innovation and world-class production to create immersive entertainment experiences.

For several years, the company has been investing in real-time graphics – building a foundation that allows ILMxLAB to deliver interactive imagery at a fidelity never seen before. As this new dimension in storytelling unfolds, ILMxLAB will develop virtual reality, augmented reality, real-time cinema, theme park entertainment and narrative-based experiences for future platforms.

Below is a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars VR experience, which will showcase a battle scene on Tatooine where you will play a Jedi, who is claimed to be a Apprentice of Luke Skywalker, who is waiting on a delivery from Han Solo.

This game will not just be a Jedi combat sim, but is an effort to try some in depth story telling in VR, making use of expert audio design and great voice acting on order to deliver a realistic experience that cannot be matched by a film.

VR has a lot of potential in the future of entertainment, so much so that developers are only now stating to scratch the surface of what is possible on the VR platform.

Hopefully we will be able to experience plenty of great VR stories and games in the years to come, but also that this technology can become cheap enough for mainstream users to adopt and for it to receive the full attention of the developer community.
