AMD’s 7000 series of graphics cards really impressed us here at OC3D. They offered great performance, and were considerably cheaper than the Nvidia equivalent, and if this wasn’t enough, they also gave you tons of games for free! Now the new R9 series is upon us, with the R9 270 offering more performance than the previous generation, at a better price, and with an even bigger choice of games!
The R9 270 is the replacement of the much loved 7850; a card which produced benchmark figures that were unheard of in mid-range cards in the past. Now, after a year of AMD tweaking the architecture, memory speed and bandwidth, the R9 270 is upon us – and so far, we’re very impressed by what they’ve done!
The MSI R9 270 Gaming Edition is a great non-reference alternative to the standard R9 270s, with its amazing looks, and factory overclocks to give you even more performance in games!

RushKit gives you a quick look around MSI’s new addition to the R9 270 family!
We love how much effort MSI have put into the design of this card. The ‘Twin Frozr IV’ cooler looks amazing when installed, and the black PCB makes this a good colour match for nearly every motherboard on the market. When it comes to coolers, looks mean nothing if it can’t keep the product cool, and MSI’s ‘Twin Frozr IV’ certainly keeps the card cool, while remaining very quiet throughout.
As MSI’s R9 270 Gaming Series is only 255mm long, it should easily make a perfect upgrade from any integrated graphics solution or any power hungry, older generations of graphics cards. AMD’s R9 270 series only pulls a mere 170 watts from the wall, making this incredibly energy efficient for the performance it gives. All of this combined, means you can have a high performing gaming PC, at a very low cost and all while being incredibly cool, quiet and energy efficient.
These cards are more than capable of maxing out games at 1920x1080, while keeping frame-rates well above playable levels. This can be aided by MSI’s new overclocking application which allows you to choose between three different modes: Overclock, Gaming and Silent modes. This is a great feature for those who like more performance, but aren’t particularly keen on manually overclocking the card themselves. Of course, if your main target from your PC is achieving 60 frames per second at maximum settings from every game you play, then this card probably isn’t for you. However, for the £139 MSI want for it, we think this is an absolute bargain. The effort that MSI have gone through to ensure that the R9 270 does not only perform great, but looks awesome, stays silent, and cools the card excellently, ticks all of the boxes for us.
So, whether it’s for a new mid-range system, or simply upgrading your old one, the low priced, high performing MSI R9 270 Gaming Series is definitely worth consideration!
