Today MSI is pleased to announce its latest addition to the popular GAMING series of graphics cards, the R9 285 GAMING 2G.

Cooled by the Twin Frozr IV Advanced, the R9 285 GAMING 2G offers an excellent balance between great gaming features and performance with  balanced out thermal and acoustic specs. Although the R9 285 GAMING already offers great performance at its price-point, the card offers even more performance through the MSI's Gaming app and Afterburner programs. The latter allows for voltage and power limit adjustment to increase overclockability and performance even further. The new MSI R9 285 GAMING 2G is powered by AMD's newest Tonga Pro GPU.

AMD's Tonga GPU

R9 285 is based on AMD's new Tonga PRO GPU, which is actually not the full Tonga chip. Cards based on full fledged Tonga are expected to be launched later this month under the R9 285X name.

Tonga PRO R9 285 has 1792 Stream Cores, 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. Radeon R9 285 is clocked at 918 MHz with the memory at 1375 MHz, the MSI GPU shown above has an overclocked GPU core at 1000MHz. The Memory configuration is what differentiates this card from its Tahiti predecessors as Tonga has in fact shorter bus (256b). To counteract the disadvantage of a smaller bus AMD has developed more efficient algorithms for features like like color compression, which has increased memory bandwidth efficiency by 40%. The only question is, are these changes enough gamers and benchmarkers not to notice?

Two other improvements to Tonga are it's  improved geometry processing, which allows the R9 285 to perform up to 4x the tessellation throughput then AMD's previous R9 280 GPU, which is great given how popular that affect is in games today.

Don't forget that Today also marks the start of AMD's Never Settle: Space Edition Bundle, which adds several new space-themed games to the already large choice of 27 free games within the bundle. These games include Star Citizen, Alien: Isolation, Space Run, and Habitat.
