High-end lenses are both expensive and large, just ask any professional photographer. For years, designers have been trying to reduce their size and cost but even now quality lenses are still bulky and highly expensive to produce.

It is clear that we have gone almost as far as we can go with traditional glass lenses, that need to be precision ground and often have visual artifacts or other imperfections when we use current technology to make them thinner and lighter.

Now a new technology has emerged that could potentially replace traditional lenses, opening up the possibility of DSLR quality cameras on mobile phones and VR headsets that are much thinner, cheaper and lighter thanks to these new lenses.

This new type of lens is called a meta-material lens, which is made from "towers" of Titanium Dioxide and is created using existing silicon processing techniques.  These lenses can split or focus light like traditional lenses but can so so in a much smaller size, with a 6cm thick lens being replaceable by a lens that is nanometers thick.

Below is a video that describes the technology in detail, describing the benefits of this new technology. Hopefully we can see this idea develop into usable products sooner rather than later.

This technology has a lot of potentials to improve a large number of products, from traditional microscopes and telescopes to cameras and even VR headsets. With smaller easier to produce lenses enthusiast grade cameras may not carry such a high price tag and become available in smaller form factors.
