Nintendo joins the Khronos Group

Nintendo has joined the Khronos Group as a Contributor Member, joining companies like EA, Valve, Oxide games and even Oculus as members of the Open standards group.

The Khronos group is a not-for-profit industry funded consortium that is focused on creating open standard APIs which are designed to accelerate computing and be entirely royalty free. The Kronos group is the group behind standards like OpenCL, OpenGL and even the new Vulcan API.

Right now it is unclear what exactly Nintendo will be contributing to Khronos, though it is likely that Nintendo will be making use of many of these Open standards for use with future programs of games consoles.

Right now AMD is rumored to be powering Nintendo's next generation NX console, so it is likely that Nintendo is working on using a version of Khronos' Vulcan API for use with this future console, since it itself was developed from AMD's own Mantle API.

Seeing Nintendo become a contribute to such a large Open Standard authority is a great thing to see, as the standards that the Khronos Group creates no doubt improve the industry as a whole.
