Nvidia is currently rumoured to be building a new GTX 1060 model, one which will be exclusive to the Chinese Internet Cafe Market and offer a more affordable alternative to the company's existing GTX 1060 6GB offering.

This new model addresses some of the key issues that are present in the company's affordable GTX 1060 3GB offerings, which offer half of the total memory capacity of the 6GB model and 128 fewer SM units, lowering the GPU's overall compute performance by around 10%. Since its inception hardware enthusiasts have found this GPU to be controversial, especially given the fact that both the 3GB and 6GB models are still called GTX 1060 GPUs, implying that the only difference between the two models is their VRAM capacity.

The GTX 1060 5GB is rumoured to offer GP106's full CUDA ore count of 1280, giving it the same compute performance as the 6GB offering, provided the same clock speeds are on offer. The GPU will offer a smaller memory controller, reducing the card's memory bus size from 192-bit to 160-bit, reducing the GPU's memory bandwidth.

According to expreview, this GPU is not coming to the consumer market, which means that we are unlikely to see this new graphics card in the west. This new model will offer Chinese internet cafes with a more affordable price point while also delivering more performance and VRAM capacity than existing GTX 1060 3GB models. This lack of VRAM capacity is a major concern for end users, especially as modern games become more VRAM intensive moving forward. There are already plenty of games that utilise 4GB of VRAM or more at 1080p at high graphical settings.
