Oculus warns users against using Nvidia's latest GPU drivers

Oculus Rift users have been reporting issues when using their VR headsets with Nvidia's latest GPU drivers, so much so that Oculus has explicitly told their users to avoid drivers newer than version 388.59 on their support website.

At this time it is unknown when Nvidia will release a fix for this issue, with Oculus describing display issues and performance inconsistencies with recent Nvidia drivers, though some reports have blamed Windows 10's creator's update for causing the problem. Those who are suffering from issues with their Oculus Rift headset should downgrade their Nvidia drivers to version 388.59, which is available to download here

Oculus' recommended driver (version 388.59) is from 2017, showcasing how many Nvidia game ready drivers are affected by this issue. Below is Oculus' warning message.

If you are using an Nvidia GPU and currently experiencing display or performance issues with your Oculus Rift, please make sure you're using driver version 388.59. Later versions may cause compatibility issues with Oculus software.

At this time the root cause of this issue is unknown, though it is likely that Nvidia is already working on a fix. Some users have found that this issue can be negated when "fast startup" is disabled in Windows, more information about this potential fix is available here.

Interesting. I have major crash issues with Elite Dangerous. I have a Rift all set up, but I don't use it to play ED, so I'm thinking these driver issues could be the root cause of my issues. Rolling back to that driver this evening!Quote
