Rise of the Tomb Raider now Supports DirectX 12

Rise of the Tomb Raider has now been updated to support DirectX 12 and Nvidia's new VXAO Ambient Occlusion technology.

Right now this patch is exclusive to the Steam version of the game, though the Windows 10 Store version of the game is expected to receive the DirectX 12 patch within the next few days.

Nixxes states that they expect this update will bring performance improvements to all PC users of the game, though those who wist to continue using the older version will be able to revert to Build 629.1 using the Steam Beta update feature.

This new update also adds a new benchmarking utility to the title, giving users a easy to use tool that can be use to compare performance between different systems and graphical presets with ease.

  • Added support for DirectX 12

  • - Adds NVIDIA VXAO Ambient Occlusion technology. This is the world’s most advanced real-time AO solution, specifically developed for NVIDIA Maxwell hardware. (Steam Only)
  • Added a new benchmark feature to allow easy comparison of performance on different systems, as well as at different graphics settings.
  • - Fixed some HBAO+ and other Ambient Occlusion issues.
  • - Fixed motion blur problems in Stereoscopic 3D mode.
  • - A variety of other smaller optimizations, bug-fixes, and tweaks.

VXAO is only available in DX11 mode. It disappeared from the setting when DX12 is enabled. Is this supposed to be this way?
Also enabling DX12 mode seems to disable Nvidia SLI. My second 980Ti stays at 0% utilisation allthough SLI is enabled. The bench score dropped from ~92fps in DX11 mode to ~74fps in DX12 mode.

System is a [email protected] on all 6 cores; 2x [email protected]/4050MHz in SLI.
Game runs in windowed fullscreen mode with everything maxed except AA which is set to SMAA. Resoultion is 2560x1600.Quote

As I said, DX12 runs only on one GPU.

I tested this a bit further and disabled SLI alltogether. Funny thing is now both DX versions run exactly the same with ~72fps. So enabling SLI might get +2fps here for DX12, but this could also be in the margin of error for the measurements.

Another funny thing is, that the highest performing mode is DX11 with exclusive fullscreen @ ~102fps. In this mode DX12 won't run at all. Just hitting the Play button exits the application and puts you to the desktop again.
Maybe this is the reason why MrKambo couldn't get this DX12 to work alltogether. Switch to windowed mode and see if that helps.

So the conclusion as of now is, that DX12 will only run in windowed mode and only on one GPU. It does next to nothing to improve the performance (at least on my system) and it prohibits the use of the newly added VXAO feature, which is only available in DX11 mode. Quote
