Samsung reveals its new Odyssey G9 8K/Dual-UHD 240Hz Gaming Monitor

Samsung launches the world's first DisplayPort 2.1 monitor at CES 2023 - An 8K 240Hz Gaming Ultra-wide

At CES 2023, Samsung has showcased their latest Odyssey Neo G9 series monitor, an 240Hz 7,680x2160 gaming beast that offers users a strong dual-wide Ultra HD gaming experience with quantum mini LED display.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor (Model Name: G95NC) is the world's first DisplayPort 2.1 gaming monitor, offering users a 2x bandwidth boost over DisplayPort 1.4. This is what allows this screen to offer its 2x 4K resolution at a staggering 240Hz, offering gamers ultra high resolution gaming at a lightning fast refresh rate. This screen is effectively a half-height 8K gaming screen, and it measures in at 57 inches and features a 1000R curvature.

Odyssey Neo G9: The World's First Dual UHD Gaming Monitor
The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor (Model Name: G95NC) lets gamers see new levels of detail with an unparalleled field of view. The gaming monitor delivers 7,680×2,160 resolution and a 32:9 aspect ratio in one screen for the first time.

Its 1000R curved 57" screen uses quantum mini LED technology with VESA Display HDR 1000 specification to deliver superior imaging in any gaming environment, from shadows to bright scenes. The Matte Display reduces light reflection on the screen, minimizing distractions during the most intense gaming sessions.

It also boasts the world's first DisplayPort 2.1 support, which transfers data approximately twice as fast as the previously used DisplayPort 1.4. In addition, the new DP 2.1 allows lossless industry-standard Display Stream Compression (DSC) to transmit information without distortion.

The Odyssey Neo G9 also supports a refresh rate of 240 Hz so that gamers will not miss a thing during fast-paced gameplay.

The problem with Samsung's new Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor (G95NC) gaming screen is that DisplayPort 2.1 is not supported by most modern gaming graphics cards. Even Nvidia's recently launched RTX 40 series graphics cards lack DisplayPort 2.1 support. That said, AMD's RX 7000 series graphics cards do support DisplayPort 2.1, making this display fully usable with AMD's latest graphics cards.

Sadly, Samsung has not revealed retail pricing or a planned release date for their new Odyssey G9 Neo display. We expect to hear more about this absurd gaming screen later this year.

Nice specs but pointless for now as the GPU needed to run it properly doesn't exist yet and by the time AMD's 8000 series and Nvidia's 5000 series are both out we'll likely have an OLED version which will blow the pants off this one.Quote

They already did! samsung is announcing 2 G9 models in CES this year, this one that is VA LCD with 4K resolution, and an OLED version, that will have 1440p resolution. Probably just a wider cut of the screen they use for the 34" variant. Additionally the OLED will have 240hz refresh rate and will apparently also be a smart monitor with Samsung's smart OS on it, altough they wasn't bvery clear on that, maybe it will just get a cut-down version of it with a few pre-selected apps.

For now, I'm just wondering how high prices will go.Quote

The OLED version of this will be eye wateringly expensive, This I reckon will easily be around the £3000 mark.Quote

This could be used in certain games with a 4090. Not Flight Sim or Cyberpunk, but much older games that people still love to play.Quote

If a 4090 can run nearly all modern titles at 4k in the 120-180 fps range, which it can, then this monitor will be able to run the same games perfectly fine. It is after all not 8k, its half of 8k, or 16 million pixels. 4k= 8 mil, 8k = 32 milQuote
