Samsung's SM961 Polaris SSD becomes available for Pre-order

Samsung's  new ultra fast SM961 SSD is now available for Pre-order, with read and write speeds of 3200MB/s and 1800MB/s and Samsung's new Polaris NVMe controller.

The Samsung 961 series of SSDs will come in two flavours, only one of which is currently available for Pre-order right now.  The SM961 that will be using 2-Bit MLC VNAND and the more cost effective PM961, which will make use of 3-Bit TLC VNAND. Both of these SSDs will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants.

When compared to their older counterparts, the SM961 and PM951, the SX961 series offer large increases in both read/write speeds and IOP performance, making this new SSD a very attractive unit for OEM system builders.

Retail availability of these SSDs will be limited as these SSDs are designed to be used by OEMs only, though a consumer release is expected later this year.

Right now it looks like the Samsung SM961 is set to the new performance and capacity champion for the M.2 SSD form factor, though we expect that Samsung will release a consumer focused 960 Pro SSD later this year.

There are 200-400 billion stars in this galaxy alone and they have to choose the one AMD already claimed. Doesn't seem like the type of thing you can't change last minute.Quote
