Samsung shows off SM961 and PM961 SSDs, offering read speeds of 3200MB/s and 3000MB/s respectively. These SSDs will use Samsung's new Polaris memory controller and should be shipping with consumer PC by the second half of this year.

Samsung's 961 series of SSDs will come in two flavours, the SM961 that will be using 2-Bit MLC VNAND and the PM961 will make use of 3-Bit TLC VNAND. Both SSDs will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants. Both of these new SSDs are pictured below and we have made a table to compare the Specifications of these new Samsung drives to compare with their older counterparts.

When compared to their older counterparts the SM961 and PM951 offer large increases in both read/write speeds and IOP performance, making this new SSD a very attractive unit for OEM system builders. Since some of the older SSD 951 models made it to retail shelve, we expect that this new SSD will also become available for purchase online at some retailers.

Hopefully Samsung will be releasing a version of these new NVMe SSDs that are marketed directly to consumers, as 1TB M.2 SSDs and the addition of a fast TLC based consumer M.2 SSD would be interesting additions to the enthusiast market.

Right now the Samsung 961 series of SSDs are intended for OEM system builders only, but hopefully we will be seeing more M.2 SSDs that are powered by Samsung's new Polaris controller later in the year.

It's designed for OEMS who don't care for looks so much would be my guess!

IMO it doesn't matter cause gamers are going to buy these as well, why can't they come out with 2 version of these Green = OEM & Black = Gamers.

Most if not all of the Z97 and maybe Z170 (i don't know cause i don't one never will) the M.2 slot is in the front where you can always see it now if you put a green one in there it's going to stick out like a sore thumb.

Every time these companies bring out a M.2 SSD and the PCB is green i will just shake my head as i have said it wouldn't even cost that much more just to make them all black PCB's.

It's just companies cutting corners by making green PCB'sQuote
