Shovel Knight is Now Playable on Cemu, the Wii U Emulator

With the latest update to Cemu, the first functioning Wii U Emulator, it now has it's first playable game, Shovel Knight.

With Cemu version 1.10 the graphical backend has been rewritten, fixing a load of graphical bugs and glitches and making future improvement of the emulator easier. This update has made Shovel Knight a playable title, though we have to note that the Emulator currently does not support AMD GPUs and no other titles are playable on the Emulator at this time.

Below is the full changelog for version 1.10 of the Cemu Emulator:

  • New future-proof GPU7 shader assembly to GLSL decompiler (work-in-progress)
  • Fixed a few bugs in color and depth buffer emulation.
  • Added more system functions, leading to higher compatibility.
  • Added hacky support for DRC rotation. Right click on the render window & drag to change the orientation
  • Implemented some background logic for audio emulation. No audio output yet.

Emulators a a huge legal gray area, especially for consoles which are currently still available for purchase new like Nintendo's Wii U, especially when they must play games in the form of ISO files or ROMs, which are ripped from the games original disks, or cartridges illegally.

While Emulation in itself may not be strictly illegal, projects like this are clearly in a grey zone, as it allows people to use pirated content and can directly affect Nintendo's potential profits.

While in its current state Cemu is no threat to Nintendo, if things continue to improve in such a rapid rate it may soon get to a stage where popular Wii U titles like Smash Brothers, Legend of Zelda WindWaker or other titles can be pirated on the PC, which will certainly get a big reaction from Nintendo if this happens before the Wii U is replaced.
