Back at CES 2018, we reported on the news that some of Samsung's 2018 QLED lineup would support HDMI 2.1 VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), though now it seems like select models in this series will also be able to utilise AMD FreeSync.

While the exact details of this support are unknown, FlatPanelsHD Samsung will support both variable refresh rate systems, which makes sense given the Xbox One's upcoming support for AMD FreeSync. Samsung has also reportedly confirmed that these displays would support 1080p resolutions at a 120Hz refresh rate, which is excellent news for those who prefer faster action to higher refresh rates. All of Samsung's 2018 QWLED TVs will offer 4K resolutions at 60Hz.

Samsung is clear that these new TVs will not fully support HDMI 2.1, though their display controllers are ready to adopt features like HDMI VRR. It is likely that we will have to wait until 2020 for a proper HDMI 2.1 display from Samsung.

FlatPanelsHD has also reported that Samsung has reduced their input lag down to 15.4ms in game mode, though the company expects this to be reduced further to "less than 7ms" in VRR mode, allowing Samsung's TVs to respond much faster to inputs from compatible consoles and PCs.

AMD has already announced that they have plans to support HDMI VRR with an upcoming driver update, with the Xbox One (S and X) being set to support FreeSync later this year. No other TV manufacturers have spoken about HDMI VRR and FreeSync support on televisions at this time.
