Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer, What is the point of In-Engine Footage?

With the promise of a Star Wars Battlefront trailer yesterday during the Star Wars Celebration Livestream, you could know that both as a Star Wars fan and as a Battlefront Fan that I would be watching that with great interest. While much of the information we received yesterday was good news, and other news was rather disappointing (like the absence of space battles), the main issue I had with the announcement that the trailer gave us no gameplay or any real information on the game. Is now the time publishers should stop providing us short movies rather than actual Gameplay or story based trailers?

I did enjoy watching the trailer for Star Wars Battlefront, the graphics looked superb and it was a very entertaining watch but it did little more than try to develop on the game's already established hype. The game will be releasing on November 17th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The graphical fidelity of the trailer is pretty much meaningless. While it was in-engine it was pre-rendered and not in any way to be considered representative of gameplay, while it looked fantastic, we have seen many times before that early footage rarely represents the final product, we need merely look at Ubisoft's Watch Dogs to find a good example of that (and that footage was called gameplay).

This trailer is nothing more than a nice little short movie, nothing more, so now with my little rant over I will detail the information given to us in the panels and reveals that followed.

No Single Player Campaign, no Classes and no Battlelog

Battlefront will not include specific player classes, making the game unlike Dice's Battlefield games or the previous Star Wars Battlefront games. Instead players will get to customize their own soldier (including gender, as there was female Storm Troopers and Rebels too), choosing from simple visual changes to even weapon or equipment loadouts. This could feel weird as a Star Wars game as the Imperial Army will certainly not feel as standardized as it should.

In the game players will be able to "seamlessly swap between 1st and 3rd person perspectives", allowing the game to be played in a traditional Battlefront 3rd person perspective or a more Battlefield Style 1st person perspective.

There will be no single player campaign for the game, but there will be a mission mode which can be played solo or with a friend in both split-screen and online modes. We don't know exactly where in the Star Wars Timeline this will take place as you can "Fight for the Empire or Republic" in this mode, suggesting that the game will take place between the end of the Clone Wars and episode V.

It was also announced that the game would not be using the Battlelog matchmaking serviced used in the recent Battlefield games.

Game Modes

There will be several game modes in Star Wars Battlefront, but here are the modes which are confirmed right now.

- Walker Mode: A game mode with up to 40 players which will have the largest scale battles in the game.

- 8-player mode (unnamed): This game will be the smallest game mode, which will be limited to 8 players and be a more focused experience.

- Mission Mode: Play specially crafted mission in Solo, splitscreen or online with a friend.

- More modes are coming but are unannounced.

DLC and the Deluxe Edition

There will be some Pre-order DLC with the game, but it will not be available at launch and will come to all players for free at a later date. This DLC will be an Episode 7 themed "Battle of Jakku Expansion" which will be available on December 1st for those that Pre-ordered the game and on December 8th for other game owners.

This DLC will include 2 multiplayer Maps on the Planet of Jakku.

The Deluxe Edition of the game, which will cost $70 for all platforms will include some early access to in game items (which can be unlocked by regular players) and some exclusive emoticons. The list is as follows.

  • - DL44 blaster – as made famous by Han Solo
  • - Ion Grenade
  • -  Ion Torpedo
  • -  Ion Shock (exclusive emote)
  • -  Victory (exclusive emote)

There will be no Space Battles

EA say that the game will be "focusing on air battles and dogfights that take place on the vistas of our planets rather than in space", so sadly this means that space battles will not be present in Star Wars Battlefront.

The Space battles included some of my favorite moments the previous games of the Star Wars Battlefront Series, but right now we don't know what are the exact consequences of this. While space can provide a very pretty backdrop for your dogfight's using on-planet locations will no doubt provide a much bigger variance in both graphics and possibly gameplay (A Coruscant map could be very interesting).

Without any battle taking place in space, this likely means that the Epic Star Destroyer vs Star Destroyer battles from previous Battlefront games will not likely be part of EA's new Battlefront, which you can be certain will be a move that will disappoint long time fans of the series. While until EA reveal more about this however we cannot be certain whether or not this game mode will return to the game (as depending on how the Star Wars Conon works now these ship battles could take place in atmo, which would provide some nice looking backdrops.

Some aspects are disappointing, but the graphics are very impressive as confirmed by many youtubers who actually got to go to Dice HQ and have a look.Quote

The trailer was pre-rendered footage, it doesn't matter.Quote

Yeah, hadn't realised, it's in engine footage, rather than in-game. I am disappoint.Quote

What I don't get is why they've quite clearly made decent Tie Fighters and X-Wings and apparently Y-Wings (from what we've seen) but no space battles?

the X-Wing is a STARfighter, the Tie Fighter is a short-range space fighter as well.. Neither were intended for low-level atmospheric dog fighting so why the insistence on canyon fights and 'vista' fights with them?

Seems a bit retard-mode to me

The Snow speeders are the low level fighters of the Rebels, certainly not the X-Wing.

But canon aside. The reveal trailer was nice, but as I said in the thread, I'll eat my hat if the game looks that good in real-time. Frostbite is nice, but it cuts corners when it's not in uber-render mode. They cut a lot of tech out to get BF3 and 4 out the door that was promised, I don't expect them to change their ways for the likes of battlefront.Quote
