Uncharted 4 singleplayer framerate locked at 30fps

Multiplayer framerate still targeted at 60fps

Uncharted 4 singleplayer framerate will be locked at 30fps

Uncharted 4 singleplayer framerate locked at 30fps

Naughty Dog has confirmed that Uncharted 4’s singleplayer will run at 30fps in a Q&A session after showing the full E3 demo yesterday (which you can check out below). Kurt Margenau and Anthony Newman, Co-Lead Game Designers at the developer based in Santa Monica, California, spent a little while answering questions from the fans. When someone asked whether the game would run at 1080p60, the developers stated the following:

“Single Player will run at 30 frames per second. It was the best solution for the gameplay and quality, and Naughty Dog wanted to have the best looking game possible, with the best graphics and phisics possible. Framerate has to be considered against everything else in the game, and the developers feel that locked, stable 30 FPS is better than variable 60. On top of that, higher frame rate would require even more optimization for every level, inflating the time it takes for each to get made and requiring the team to make more compromises. Multiplayer still targets 60 frames per second, and the team can’t wait to show it off.”

Uncharted 4 singleplayer framerate will be locked at 30fps

Last year Naughty Dog held an interview with Eurogamer, where they stated they were aiming for 1080p at 60fps, which obviously didn’t work out. Don’t be too hard on them though, as they did state that if 1080p60 wasn’t stable, a locked framerate at 30fps would still be an option.

"A lot of it was because we could try something out on our PS4 engine. How far can we do it? Can we do a 1080p, 60fps game? We always wanted to do that, but for the types of effects we wanted to put on screen 720p30 was just fine. Now with the push to go even further that's not fine enough. So we're trying to rise to meet that kind of challenge too. I think that's what we want to push for with anything we're doing on this generation. That's sort of the mandate from when we were building the PS4 engine. Let's see if we can do this and hit it. We hit it with The Last of Us Remastered, so why not stick with this?"

Other statements Naughty Dog made during the Q&A session included the promise that the level-design will be more open and that there will be different animations for slightly lower cover positions.

Sony unveiled the extended gameplay video of the E3 demo yesterday.

Do you prefer visual quality over framerates (read: 1080p at 30fps), or vice versa (720p at 60fps)? If you’re not completely familiar with framerates, be sure to read our article explaining framerates. Uncharted 4 will hit the shelves Q1 2016, and will be exclusive to PS4.

Not surprised the least bit. The demo they showed at E3 was too good to be true (which is the norm now).

I highly doubt the game will stay locked at 30 fps, especially on the more intensive scenes.Quote

I hope they'll add an option to disable the framerate lock (like they did with The Last of Us Remastered). I don't mind variable framerate that much, as long as its around 30 or higher. But yeah, that gameplay demo looked way to good indeed.Quote

If it manages to stay at a constant 30 fps, with very minor dips, it should be okay.

Doesn't The Last of Us Remastered run at 1080p60?Quote

Yeah it does, but I think they added an option to lock the framerate at 30fps. Apparently some actually preferred the cinematic experience.

EDIT: it was actually in the same interview in which Naughty Dog stated they were aiming for 60fps for Uncharted 4.

Since it's Single Player for 30fps it's not such a big issue. The fact they are doing it for Multiplayer just by slightly reducing graphics is a smart idea imo for console devs. MP benefits more from the higher FPS than SP does as it's more difficult to kill another player than AI.Quote
