When Nvidia planned to refresh its RTX 30 series lineup, the company considered a variety of options. While the company eventually settled on releasing Ti series refreshed for several models, there was a time where Nvidia considered a broader RTX 30 series SUPER refresh, a similar refresh to their RTX 20 SUPER series.
Below, we can see that Nvidia’s RTX 30 SUPER series refresh was at an advanced development stage, with Nvidia creating an all-black RTX 3090 Founders Edition GPU model. This GPU is likely identical to the RTX 3090 Ti that Nvidia eventually launched on a hardware level, offering gamers a different aesthetic due to this GPU’s all-black elements.
Nvidia ultimately chose to axe their RTX 30 SUPER series of graphics cards in favour of new Ti series models that launched over an extended timeframe. Nvidia’s RTX 3070, RTX 3080, and RTX 3090 all received enhanced Ti series refreshes, with Nvidia’s RTX 3080 also later receiving a further refresh with the GPU’s 12GB non-Ti model.
With Nvidia choosing not to use their RTX SUPER branding on their RTX 30 series, it is probable that Nvidia will not release RTX 40 SUPER series GPUs. That said, enhanced Ti series versions of their RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 are possible.
At this time, it is unknown if Nvidia plans to refresh their RTX 40 series GPU lineup. Rumour has it that gamers will be waiting until early 2025 for Nvidia to launch next-generation RTX 50 series products, which could mean that Nvidia plans to release a refreshed RTX 40 series GPU lineup in 2024 to plug that gap in their release schedule.
