Valve Starts Shipping SteamVR Dev Kits

Valve has began shipping SteamVR dev kits to developers, bringing with it the HTC Vive headset, 2 lighthouse base stations, a pair of wireless Steam VR Controllers and all other required cables and instructions or the new hardware.

“This first wave includes a wide range of developers from major movie studios, triple A developers, to small indie teams working on their first title,”

“We will continue to ship to additional developers through the spring and summer.”

Valve's VR Headset has been Revealed

"HTC’s Vive headset, powered by SteamVR, pulls those virtual worlds off your computer screen and into your home. You’ll experience sights and sounds vivid and lifelike enough to transport you to another place, another time—whole new realities with limitless possibilities."

Cloudhead Games has already posted an unboxing of the dev kit onto Youtube, showing us some of the changes that have taken place since we first saw the headset back in March and giving us our first proper look at the hardware.

Below you can see Cloudhead Games' unboxing video.

Valve did say that they were aiming for a holiday 2015 release, meaning that soon we consumer will be able to experience VR for ourselves, outside of a controlled showroom event.

We know that the device will use dual 1200x 1080 screens which operate at 90Hz which HTC say will give it's users a full field of view. The headset will also include a gyro-sensor, accelerator and laser positioning and can be used with Steam's VR Base station on order to track physical movements around a room.
