XCOM 2 creative director says PC gaming is in a golden age

The upcoming turn-based strategy game XCOM 2 will launch exclusively on PC for multiple reasons. One being that focusing on one platform makes it easier to focus on optimizing the controls and interface for that particular platform, but there’s more to it. Jake Solomon, Creative Director of XCOM 2, stated that PC gaming is in a golden age in an interview with PC Gamer.

XCOM 2 creative director says PC gaming is in a golden age

"PC gaming is in a golden age. It’s the tip of the spear in terms of innovation, in types of gameplay being explored, in relationships between developers and their audience, and for Firaxis, it’s our home. It’s where we want to be."

According to him, the mod support for XCOM 2 will strengthen the relationship between Fireaxis and their audience. "Modding is one of those elements that brings people together in the community through their own creative expression of the franchise and this and helps our game live on over time," states Solomon. Jake Solomon also praises XCOM’s The Long War mod.

"The Long War is awesome. It definitely energized us to see XCOM going in different directions, and seeing people respond to it. That’s always reassuring as a developer because it means that the underlying systems are flexible and there is still lots of ground to mine in terms of gameplay."

With that being said, Solomon also told PC Gamer that Fireaxis isn’t looking to add more features to XCOM 2, but instead they are focusing on improving the features that make XCOM what it is. Expect procedural maps, more enemies, more soldier classes and, well, more.

He is right. The enormous power PCs now have gives PC games a huge range of possibilities which were only dreams. However few publishers won't see/don't care about that and only want to shift a game to larger market bases aka consoles so few games will reach their potential. Though when VR comes out and the gpu shrink to 14nm lands, this will make the rift so huge I think few devs would pass up on the chance of making PC games.Quote
