Gamers discover hidden Steam Controller Easter Egg

Gamers have discovered a secret easter egg for Valve’s Steam Controller

Steam Controller users have uncovered an easter egg that PC gamers can hear if the controller is dropped. While early reports claimed that this required Steam’s Big Picture mode to be activated, apparently, this is not the case.

When dropped (please drop your controller onto a padded surface when testing this), its haptic motors can produce a “Wilhelm Scream” noise. After this, the controller will not do it again for about 1 minute, so you can’t make it do it again immediately.

What’s most interesting about this easter egg is that Valve’s Steam Controller lacks an integrated speaker. Valve’s Steam controller can make noise using its haptic motors. That means Valve’s engineers spent a lot of time tuning their haptic motors to achieve this sound.

A Reddit user called RF3D19 was the first to spot this easter egg. After reporting the easter egg on Reddit, they created a quick YouTube video showing the behaviour.

I have discovered an easter egg

If you drop the controller while in steam big picture mode (on a pillow or a bed, we’re not psychopaths here), it will occasionally play the wilhelm scream with the haptic motors. Do whatever you want with this information, I just feel like I needed to share this asap

Edit: I got a video so that I can prove i’m not going insane https://youtu.be/tw5Luf_7F8c

And, it seems to have a timeout period about a minute long so that you can’t do it over and over immediately

Edit again: I discovered this by tossing my controller onto my bed, no controllers were harmed in the making of this post

Valve’s Steam Controller became available on May 4th and sold out quickly. The controller is currently available on Steam through Valve’s “Reservations” system.
