Valve’s Steam Controller is available now
It’s finally here! Valve’s Steam Controller is now available to purchase
It’s official: Valve’s second-generation Steam Controller is now available, giving PC gamers a premium gamepad optimised exclusively for PC gaming. No PS5 DualSense or Xbox controller, just pure PC goodness.
In the UK, the Steam Controller is available for £85, and Valve currently claims that shipping will take 3-5 business days. In the US, this controller will cost $99, and in the EU, the controller costs €99. The controller has a configuration similar to Valve’s Steam Deck handheld, offering users dual trackpads alongside joysticks, a D-pad, and all other standard controller buttons. Additionally, the controller features 4 haptic motors for HD rumble, TMR magnetic thumbsticks, gyro options, and multiple configurable back buttons.
The Steam Controller supports your “whole Steam Library”
With an 8.39 Wh battery, Valve says its Steam Controller can last 35+ hours on a single charge. The controller promises a long lifespan with its magnetic (TMR) thumbsticks, and boasts easy wireless gameplay and charging with its included “Puck”. This puck enables low-latency wireless connectivity and easy magnetic charging. The controller also features Bluetooth connectivity, so users can connect it to their systems without a puck.
Valve’s original Steam gamepad launched in 2015, and its successor features a much more conventional layout. The new gamepad builds on the success of Valve’s Steam Deck, offering support for all PC games with industry-standard buttons/joysticks while also delivering additional control options.
Valve has stated that their gamepad supports “your whole Steam Library”. Currently, it is unknown how well this controller works when playing games from alternative PC storefronts. Is it just as compatible with games on the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, or Ubisoft Connect? We plan to test these possibilities soon.
