Modder delivers huge 64GB upgrade for ASUS’ ROG Xbox Ally X
Modder disassembles ASUS’ ROG Xbox Ally X to give it a 64GB memory upgrade
SlickBuys Mods and Repairs has managed to craft a custom 64GB ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. This mod replaces the four 6GB of LPDDR5X memory chips on the handheld with larger 16GB memory packages. This upgraded the handheld from its original 24GB capacity to 64GB.
While the mod requires desoldering DRAM and replacing the modules, that is only the start of this system’s modding process. This mod requires custom BIOS edits and strap resistor changes to ensure that the system’s new memory modules run at their intended speeds. In other words, it’s a challenging process that should only be done by professionals. This isn’t a desktop PC-style DRAM module swap.
While having 64GB of memory on a handheld gaming PC may seem overkill, it is worth noting that most modern games recommend having 32GB of system memory. Yes, game developers are overstating things with these recommendations (remember the PS5 and Xbox Series X only have 16GB of shared memory). Regardless, it is easy to see how high-resolution textures and other demanding settings could potentially use more than the ROG Xbox Ally X’s 24GB of memory. However, using appropriate game settings should avoid issues like this.
Is the mod overkill? Yes! Is it awesome? Also, yes! Given the risks involved, I wouldn’t recommend modding your ROG Xbox Ally X. That said, if you want to push the limits of handheld gaming and you don’t care about destroying your warranty, why not? Just be aware that issues may arise when it comes time to update your system’s BIOS.
