SK Hynix reveals the “Industry’s Best GDDR7” memory – 40 Gbps speeds planned!
SK Hynix claims that their GDDR7 memory is the best in the industry
SK Hynix has claimed that they have released the “industry’s best performing graphics memory” with their new GDDR7 memory chips. With speeds of 32Gbps, SK Hynix claims that their new memory is 60% faster and 50% more power efficient than their last-generation memory. That’s a huge performance boost, and a big deal for the memory industry.
This new GDDR7 memory from SK Hynix will enter mass production in Q3 2024. The company also confirmed that their GDDR7 memory speeds can grow to 40 Gbps. That’s a 25% performance boost over their already impressive 32Gbps speeds. To put it another way, SK Hynix’ planned 40 Gbps GDDR7 memory is two times faster than SK Hynix’s fastest GDDR6 memory.
There is more to SK Hynix’s new memory than speed and power efficiency. SK Hynix has increased the number of heat-dissipating layers from four to six while applying EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) to their chips. This change has decreased thermal resistance by a reported 74% over SK Hynix’s last-generation memory. As a result of this, SK Hynix’s new GDDR7 memory is much easier to cool.
Overall, SK Hynix appears to have improved their GDDR memory technology in all areas. It’s faster, more efficient, and easier to cool than their existing GDDR6 memory chips. That paints a strong picture for GDDR7, especially as this technology is refined further.
With 40 Gbps GDDR7 memory on the horizon, memory bandwidth will be much less of a concern for the next few generations of graphics cards. That said, it remains to be seen how long it will take for 40 Gbps GDDR7 will take to come to market.
