Amazon Web Services outage takes down countless websites

Amazon Web services outage takes down Zoom, Snapchat, and more

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has experienced a major outage, impacting much of the world’s internet services. AWS is one of the world’s leading server providers for businesses. Today, countless websites and online services are experiencing outages. This is impacting banks, websites, apps, and gaming services. If it uses an Amazon server, it may be impacted.

This morning, UK banks Lloyds and its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, are reportedly facing issues. Users are unable to log into their online banking accounts. Currently it is unknown if Lloyds bank use Amazon servers, though the timing of these issues suggest they do.

Apps like Snapchat, Zoom, Roblox, Wordle and more are facing issues, as are Epic Games Duolingo, and Rocket League. There are also claims that Sony’s PlayStation Network is affected. Games like Fortnite are also reportedly experiencing issues.

Currently, the cause of these issues are unknown. However, they seem to be linked to Amazon Web Services. Amazon engineers are currently working on a fix for these issues.

Currently, it is unknown how long it will take for affected websites to be fixed.

Update – Amazon claims that they have uncovered the root cause of this morning’s issues. If this is true, it is only a matter of time before affected services return to normal.

We have identified a potential root cause for error rates for the DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region.

We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.
