AMD to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion
AMD has confirmed it has agreed to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal that strengthens AMD’s AI capabilities by bringing world-leading AI talent into the company. World Labs is led by Dr Fei-Fei Li, an AI pioneer known by many as the “Grandmother of AI” for her work in computer vision and the creation of ImageNet. This work sparked the deep-learning boom, which eventually led to LLMs and modern “AI”.
Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, and report directly to Dr Lisa Su, AMD’s CEO. World Labs team will continue to focus on advancing AI model research in San Francisco.
AMD hopes to leverage World Labs’ AI talents to enhance its future AI hardware, software, and systems. This should place AMD in a stronger position as its continues to compete with Nvidia for AI market share.

This acquisition comes as AMD reaches new highs
This acquisition comes shortly after AMD’s market cap reached $1 trillion. AMD’s rising stock values place the company in a strong position for all-stock acquisition deals like this one. AMD can acquire World Labs without immediate cash outlay. That said, issuing new shares carries risk, as existing shareholders will see their ownership diluted by the issuance of new AMD shares.
Last year, World Labs started a deep technical partnership with AMD, which began with model training and inference optimisation on AMD GPUs. After the acquisition, the company will become AMD’s frontier research organisation, committed to “building out an end-to-end open AI ecosystem spanning hardware, software, platforms, and widely accessible open models.”
AMD clearly sees a future in AI technology. AMD wouldn’t be spending billions if it didn’t think the gains were worth the cost. The acquisition is expected to close before the end of this year.
