GAME sells Multiplay’s Digital Division to Unity for £19 million

Back in March 2015, GAME, the UK games retailer purchased Multiplay for £20 million. This morning it has been revealed that GAME has now sold off Multiplay’s Digital Division to Unity for £19 million, recouping most of their original investment while retaining ownership of the company’s esports and events business.

GAME originally purchased Multiplay to bolster its presence in the UK’s growing esports scene, giving the company avenues to earn money outside of traditional games retail, which has been hit hard by online and all-digital games sales.

Today, Multiplay Digital offers online hosting services for several high-profile companies, which includes Samsung, Mojang, EA, DICE, Paradox Interactive and SEGA. This sale will allow GAME to simplify the Multiplay Group and will enable them to prioritize the events and esports side of the business, while also giving a substantial cash injection to the company.

This deal will give GAME and initial payment of £17.1 million from Unity, with an additional payment of £1.9 million in 19 months. It will indeed be interesting to see what Unity does with this section of Multiplay.

This deal makes a lot of logical sense, as GAME did not purchase Multiplay for their game hosting services, providing the company with an entire division that they did not necessarily want. GAME wanted Multiplay for their popular esports and gaming events, with Insomnia/I-Series being a prime example.

With this sale, GAME has made back most of its investment into Multiplay while retaining all that GAME initially wanted from their purchase, which is a fantastic turn of events for GAME given their recent financial struggles.
