Intel becomes the “x86 battery life king” with its Core Ultra 3 CPUs

Intel promises high performance and a high battery life with its new Panther Lake CPUs

At CES 2026, Intel has launched its new Core Ultra 3 series “Panther Lake” processors. During their launch event, Intel claimed to be the “x86 battery life king”, highlighting how it had met its design goals with its latest processors. At its launch event, Intel confirmed that more than 200 laptop designs are already powered by its new Panther Lake CPU platform, with many on display.

With its Core Ultra 3 series, Intel is offering performance levels higher than those of its Arrow Lake mobile platform while delivering higher power efficiency than its Lunar Lake series CPUs. In other words, all of the best aspects of its last-generation product families, and more, within a single platform. That’s what Panther Lake is all about.

Intel’s most efficient x86 processor

Compared with its CPUs from three years ago, Intel has reduced power draw by up to 65% in common workloads. For 4K YouTube playback, Intel’s Core 7 150U CPU drew 2.8x the power of today’s Core Ultra X9 388H. These efficiency gains deliver significant battery life improvements across common workloads, giving users a much better on-battery experience.

Slashing power draw

Compared ot its last-generation Core Ultra 7 255H, their new Core Ultra 9 388H consumes 16-57% less power across typical workloads. In most cases, Intel’s Core Ultra 9 388H draws less power than the Core Ultra 9 288V Lunar Lake, a lower-performance CPU with fewer cores.

If you are replacing an Arrow Lake or older H-series laptop, you can expect a much longer battery life with a new Core Ultra 3 series Panther Lake laptop.

What about AMD?

When running the same test on AMD’s Ryzen AI 365, Intel claims 31-78% lower power draw across the same battery life test suite. That means Intel claims it can deliver significantly longer battery life than its x86 competitor.

Up to 27 hours of battery life!

For Netflix streaming, Intel claims that Panther Lake Core Ultra X9 388H laptops can deliver up to 27 hours of battery life. That means Intel’s latest laptops could last an entire workday without needing a charge. That means that “forgetting your charger” is now much less of an issue than it once was. It also means that “battery anxiety” need not plague laptop users.

Intel VS Qualcomm and AMD

Intel claims to be the “x86 battery life king”. That’s a specific claim. Below, we can see why Intel isn’t the “battery life king”. Qualcomm still claims battery life leadership in some areas, with a similarly sized device with a smaller battery besting Intel’s Core Ultra X7 358H. That said, Intel has beaten AMD by a significant margin despite having a smaller battery.

While Qualcomm’s ARM-based laptops offer advantages, Intel has significantly narrowed the gap. Additionally, Intel has narrowed this gap without any compromises. ARM-based Windows applications still lack the full software compatibility of x86 PCs, which means Qualcomm users are replacing battery anxiety with software anxiety. With Panther Lake, Intel is offering long battery life without compromise, which is appealing.
