Modder creates RTX 4090-powered PC handheld with 4K screen

Modder builds insane 4K PC handheld with RTX 4090 laptop GPU

Although fun, PC gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally are underpowered compared to larger devices. Gaming laptops and desktops are where the highest levels of PC performance are available, but what would happen if you pushed an RTX 4090 into a handheld gaming PC? That’s what a Chinese modder had done on Bilibili.

With its RTX 4090 laptop GPU and Intel i9-14900HX CPU, this custom handheld is a powerful gaming device. While it is larger than most common PC handhelds with its 12.5-inch 4K screen, it’s still a handheld device. However, given its small 50Wh battery, this handheld has a short battery life.

Given its use of Nvidia hardware, it’s tempting to speculate that this is what a high-end “Switch XL” system could look like. What if Nintendo decided to make a high-end console and continued its partnership with Nvidia? On Bilibili, this system has been showcased playing Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War Ragnarok.

High-end performance, but battery life is a problem

In effect, this is a high-end gaming laptop that has been placed within a handheld form factor. The device features 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory, a 12.5-inch 4K IPS Sharp touchscreen, and 4TB of NVMe SSD storage. Sadly, this device’s 50 Wh battery is its limiting factor, as its GPU can run at below 72 degrees Celsius under load. Cooling isn’t a problem, but power delivery is.

Note that ASUS’ ROG Ally and ROG Ally X handhelds have 40 Wh and 80 Wh batteries, respectively. Neither of these devices is known for having a long battery life. With an RTX 4090 laptop GPU, this modded handheld doesn’t operate for long given its small battery size. Even so, this device highlights that higher-end PC handhelds are possible.
