Nintendo’s upgraded Switch will reportedly feature an improved CPU, memory, screen and GPU

Rumour has it that Nintendo has a “New Switch” console in the works, a new system that will offer gamers across-the-board hardware upgrades, offering gamers an OLED screen, and an upgraded Nvidia-made chipset. 

One of the killer add-ons to Nintendo’s rumoured “New Switch” is support for Nvidia’s DLSS technology, as reported by Bloomberg. This upgrade will come as part of a new Switch SOC, which will also become a vital part of Nvidia’s next-generation Shield TV entertainment system. 

Alongside DLSS, which itself requires an upgrade to Nvidia’s newer GPU architecture, Nvidia’s new Switch SOC will include improved CPU cores and support for more (and faster) memory. 

With Nintendo’s New Switch/Switch Pro hardware, the company will be remedying the weak points of the company’s existing Switch hardware. This will allow developers to create titles that can play games at higher resolutions, smoother framerates, and higher levels of graphical detail. With such a leap in hardware capabilities, some games are expected to be exclusive to Nintendo’s new switch.

Nvidia’s DLSS tech powers Nintendo’s 4K dreams

Nvidia’s DLSS AI upscaling tech can be used to upscale games to higher resolutions with near-native levels of image quality. This feature is a game-changer for consoles, allowing Nintendo to deliver higher levels of graphical detail without investing in cutting-edge non-portable hardware. 

With DLSS, Nintendo can deliver 4K-quality visuals without sacrificing the Switch’s unique selling points. Nintendo’s new Switch can maintain its lower power targets while offering high-resolution visuals when docked. This will allow Nintendo to compete with the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles without sacrificing the Switch’s portability.

The New Switch’s upgrades will come at a cost

Nintendo’s new Switch console will release with premium pricing, with analysts expecting a retail price of between $349 and $399 in the US. This new Switch console is reportedly due to release before the end of 2021, though this year’s silicon shortage may force Nintendo to delay the launch of its New Switch system until 2022.
