Nvidia and TSMC fab their first Nvidia Blackwell wafers on US soil
TSMC and Nvidia have started producing Blackwell AI chips on US soil
TSMC and Nvidia have recently celebrated the start of Nvidia Blackwell wafer production at TSMC’s Arizona facility. Volume Production has now been achieved at the site, boosting Nvidia’s AI chip output. This means that Nvidia Blackwell chips are now being produced on US soil, bolstering Nvidia’s US supply chain.
If the US Trump Administration implements tariffs on foreign-made chips, as has often been threatened, Nvidia will be able to avoid these tariffs with US-made AI silicon. TSMC’s Arizona facility was created with funding from the US CHIPS Act, which was implemented under the Biden administration.
While creating Blackwell wafers in the US is a huge step, they still need to be shipped offshore for TSMC’s CoWos “Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate” packaging technology. This means that Nvidia’s AI chips still need to utilise offshore technology to create complete products. Regardless, this is a significant step forward for US AI chip manufacturing.
To go from arriving in Arizona to delivering the first U.S.-made NVIDIA Blackwell chip in just a few short years represents the very best of TSMC.
This milestone is built on three decades of partnership with NVIDIA – pushing the boundaries of technology together – and on the unwavering dedication of our employees and the local partners who helped to make TSMC Arizona possible.
– TSMC Arizona CEO Ray Chuang
Nvidia has claimed that TSMC Arizona will produce chips based on TSMC’s 2nm, 3nm, and 4nm nodes. Additionally, the site will eventually be used to create A16 silicon. Long-term, TSMC Arizona will continue to be a huge part of TSMC’s operations, securing chipmaking manufacturing in the US.
