Nvidia DLSS 5 Trailer taken down by Italians, yes really

An Italian TV station has claimed ownership of Nvidia’s DLSS 5 trailer, proving that YouTube’s copyright system is absurdly broken

Who owns Nvidia’s DLSS 5 trailer: Nvidia, or a bunch of Italians and their TV station? The Italian broadcaster La7 has blocked Nvidia’s DLSS5 reveal trailer, citing copyright grounds. Why? La7 showcased the trailer during a broadcast, and now YouTube’s broken copyright system is claiming the trailer as theirs.

Now, Nvidia’s official trailer isn’t receiving any viewership on YouTube, with views being directed to 3rd-party content. YouTube’s copyright system is so broken that even Nvidia’s original content is being blocked. Whether this was caused by an automated system or an accidental mass copyright strike from a La7 employee remains unknown.

This occurrence is equal parts concerning and hilarious. It’s concerning that YouTube’s copyright system is taking down original works in favour of 3rd party content. However, given DLSS 5’s controversial nature, I’m sure many people are finding this incident incredibly funny. After all, there is no shortage of people who would like to see Nvidia cancel DLSS 5.

(Is it still taken down?)

We expect Nvidia to regain control of this situation soon, either by pressuring YouTube or La7 directly. Either way, we don’t expect Nvidia’s DLSS 5 trailer to be offline for long.

If nothing else, this incident highlights the dangers when large platforms lack human oversight. Would this have happened if YouTube had human operators overseeing its copyright system? Probably not. That said, most large online platforms operate with a dangerous lack of oversight. Copyright enforcement is just one problem with these large non-human systems, and we don’t expect things to get better anytime soon.
