One of the last PS2 hardware secrets has been unlocked, with the console’s CXP102064 MechaCon (Mechanics Controller) chip being “broken wide open” by hardware enthusiasts. After four years of reverse-engineering, DiscoStarslayer has announced that the firmware for the chip has been successfully extracted, something that has never been achieved since the PS2’s launch over 26 years ago.
The PS2’s “MechaCon” chip controls the console’s optical drive and various security functions. Its jobs include disc security, “Magicgate” data encryption, and KELF file decryption. Reverse-engineering the chip could be vital for PS2 game preservation and for future PS2 homebrew software development. Emulators may be able to use this data to more accurately reproduce aspects of the PS2 in software, improving accuracy and compatibility. Furthermore, this development may impact other devices that use the CXP102064 MechaCon chip. This includes several arcade systems that use a PS2-style system architecture.
A 4-year effort
Getting to this point required both physical and software reverse-engineering. The project required decapping Sony’s security chip, optically dumping the silicon, and then creating a software solution that could extract the chip’s firmware. A contributor called “Libby” was credited with finding the exploit that allowed the chip to be “broken wide open”.
Right now, dumping this chip’s firmware is not a safe procedure. Current methods can damage or corrupt the PS2’s EEPROM. As such, regular PS2 owners should not try to dump their chip’s firmware. Safer tools may become available in the future.

This development could greatly impact the PS2 homebrew and modding scenes. It could also further improve PS2 emulation. PCSX2 already classifies over 99.5% of all PS2 games as “Playable”, but only 1.23% as perfect. Could this development help push PS2 emulation to perfection? Perhaps this development could enable the creation of a PS2 optical drive emulator, or other exciting console mods.
