Prusa launches their new MK4S 3D printer

Enhanced cooling, boosted quality, and faster speeds – Meet the Prusa MK4S

Prusa has officially revealed their new MK4S 3D printer, a new an improved version of their existing MK4 3D printer. This new 3D printer is available starting today in both pre-built and kit forms, and arrive with the same pricing as the company’s existing MK4. That means that the MK4S is giving Prusa customers a range of new feature upgrades without a price increase.

When compared to the MK4, the new MK4S features a new high flow rate nozzle out of the box, a new high-performance 3D cooling system, faster print speeds, and improved print quality. Additionally, the printer supports the new Prusa app, and supports easier WiFi setup (with NFC tap support).

Another change with the MK4S is Prusa’s move to using PC Carbon Fiber filament for their 3d printed parts. Some parts have also been replaced with injection moulded parts. Optional accessories are also available for the MK4S, including a “GPIO hacker board”, and a accelerometer for MK4S modders.

The need for speed

With the MK4S, Prusa are promising a marginal increase in speed when compared to the standard MK4 when using the same profiles. That said, Prusa promises faster real-world print speeds than many of their competitors. Beyond that, their profiles are fine-tuned to deliver high quality results. Prusa printers are a reliable workhorses of the 3D printing world, and their standard profiles just work. Some other brands promise faster speeds, but these speeds can come with inaccurate prints, increased print failures, and other issues.

The MK4S’s real speed increases come from its high flow rate nozzle and its ability to support higher layer heights without issue. With the MK4S and a 0.4mm nozzle, Prusaslicer now features built-in 025mm and 0.28mm layer height profiles. This enables faster prints for any project that doesn’t require thin layers.

Can you upgrade your Prusa MK4 to a MK4S?

Prusa has confirmed that a MK4 to MK4S upgrade kit will become available to order before the end of this month. Anyone who ordered a MK4 3D printer between August 1st and 12th will get a voucher for a free MK4S upgrade kit. Current, unshipped, MK4 orders will be upgraded to MK4S orders. Additionally, MK3.5/MK3.9 and MK4 upgrade kits will be upgrades to their equivalent “S” series upgrades.

Prusa’s MK4 to MK4S upgrade will be available for 99 USD / 109 EUR (VAT included).
