Rumoured DualSense V3 controller to launch with removable battery

Sony’s reportedly adding a removable battery to its DualSense V3 PS5 controllers

According to a report from ppe.pl, Sony’s planning to release a new “DualSense V3” controller later this year alongside a refreshed PlayStation 5 Pro model. Sony’s new PS5 Pro reportedly features some minor design tweaks and consumes around 3% less power than older PS5 Pro models. This new console will ship with Sony’s new DualSense controller, which reportedly features a removable battery.

All current Sony DualSense controllers feature built-in batteries. This feature forces users to plug in their controllers for charging, which is a common annoyance for PlayStation users. Xbox controllers can use AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack, allowing users to quickly swap batteries or battery packs when their controllers run out of battery. It appears that Sony intends to add similar functionality to its DualSense controllers.

The new DualSense controller could eliminate the need for long USB cables for controller charging. If users have a second battery pack, they could charge one battery while gaming with the other. Currently, it is unknown if this controller will support standard AA batteries or use a custom battery.

With this new battery solution, Sony appears to be giving DualSense users more options. Battery swapping is a useful feature, and it looks like PlayStation users will soon have access to it. Currently, it is unknown if older DualSense controller models will be discontinued or if Sony’s new version will launch with different pricing.
