The Switch becomes Nintendo’s all-time best-selling console

Nintendo confirms that the Switch is now its most successful console

Nintendo has updated its sales data for its dedicated consoles, confirming that the original Switch is now the most successful gaming system. As of December 31st, 2025, the console has sold over 155.37 million units, surpassing the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units during its lifespan. The Nintendo Switch is now the company’s best-selling console.

While the Switch 2 is Nintendo’s newest console, the company are still selling their original Switch console as a low-cost gaming option. While the system is now Nintendo’s most successful, Sony’s PlayStation 2 remains the world’s best-selling console, selling 160 million units over its 13-year lifespan. It remains to be seen if the original Switch will surpass Sony’s PlayStation 2.

Last year, Nintendo sold 17.37 million Switch 2 consoles. Overall, the system’s sales are slightly lower than those of its predecessor during the same timeframe. As such, the Switch 2 can be considered a success for Nintendo. It has already surpassed the Wii U’s 13.56 million lifetime sales.

Nintendo has confirmed that its Switch 2 console has driven its profits up 51% over the first nine months of FY26, reaching ¥358.86 billion. Before the end of this financial year, Nintendo aims to sell 19 million Switch 2 consoles.

Despite higher pricing, Nintendo’s Switch 2 is selling well. That said, the Switch 2 is unlikely to be as successful as Nintendo’s original Switch console in the long term. The Switch’s lower price and factors like the COVID-19 pandemic helped drive strong sales for the console throughout its lifecycle. That said, it’s still early days for the Switch 2. Perhaps Nintendo can make the Switch 2 more successful over time.
