Waymo and Intel are working together to create self-driving car technology

In a new press release, Intel has confirmed that they are working with Waymo (a subsidiary of Alphabet) to create their newest self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vehicles.

Here Intel has provided some of the technology used for sensor processing, general compute and connectivity for the vehicle, with Intel stating that they are working closely with Waymo to offer the processing power that is required to create level 4 and Level 5 autonomy.  These are the two highest levels of vehicle autonomy, as detailed in SAE International’s self-driving standard (J3016).

Intel’s CEO, Brian Krzanich, believes that self-driving cars will be so widespread that within his children’s children will never have to drive a car. With this being the case, it is easy to see why the likes of Google (Alphabet), Intel, Nvidia and Apple are interested in self-driving cars. Here is a comment from Brian Krzanich.

One of the big promises of artificial intelligence (AI) is our driverless future. Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes worldwide every year – an average 3,287 deaths a day. Nearly 90 percent of those collisions are caused by human error.

Self-driving technology can help prevent these errors by giving autonomous vehicles the capacity to learn from the collective experience of millions of cars – avoiding the mistakes of others and creating a safer driving environment.

Given the pace at which autonomous driving is coming to life, I fully expect my children’s children will never have to drive a car. That’s an astounding thought: Something almost 90 percent of Americans do every day will end within a generation. With so much life-saving potential, it’s a rapid transformation that Intel is excited to be at the forefront of along with other industry leaders like Waymo.

(Will your future car have Intel inside?)

So far Waymo cars with Intel technology have driven over 3 million miles on real roads, which is more than any other self-driving autonomous fleet in the US. Intel’s continued collaboration with Waymo is set to secure Intel a role in the future of self-driving cars, which is set to be a huge market in the future.
